Lake Louise & Plain of Six Glaciers Hike

- Banff National Park, AB, Canada

21. August '14

Even under a thick cover of clouds Lake Louise is one of the most beautiful places on this planet - it's no surprise that it's the most photographed lake worldwide. And the further we hiked up to the glacier the more remote I felt from all civilization. A truly liberating feeling.
Slowly (but surely) I am starting to develop an unstoppable passion for hiking. Pain, sweat, hunger and weariness and a part of this process and, in contrast to only a couple of weeks ago, I am barely intimidated by them anymore.

Johnston Canyon // Ink Pots

- Banff National Park, Alberta, Canada

My volunteer project with Parcs Canada in Banff (in the province of Alberta) is simply the bomb!! I've been here for about a week and don't feel like I have worked a minute. We spend 90% of our time outdoors doing activities such as hiking, riding our bikes, gardening, attending cultural events, etc. and I am enjoying every second of it! Of course, the past week might have been the most exhausting one of my life and we benefit the national park with the work that we do a lot, but I've got the feeling that I benefit from it the most. E.g. we hiked for almost five hours along Johnston Canyon to the Ink Pots and I had to find a way to stop holding myself back multiple times.
And it was worth it. So worth it.

Downtown Vancouver & Stanley Park

What the fuck?

A lot has happened since you last heard from me! On 7th August, after a 10 hour flight and 5 plastic cups of whiskey, I landed in Vancouver, British Columbia. Similar to Lisbon I immediately noticed the proximity to the sea! And oh, all the green spaces and the mountains! Along with all the glass fronts of the skyscrapers the city seems to be a perfect hybrid of high tech and nature. (...) It was rather unexpected that I found great people to hang out with so quickly in Canada, which will be my home for the upcoming 10 months. Thus I had a great, though at times stressful, couple of days at the west coast. Unfortunately there are a lot of homeless people, hipsters and homeless hipsters in the city. And the time difference of 9 hours (as compared to Germany) just killed me. On top of that food is just astonishingly expensive around here!! Like what the actual fuck?
A few days ago though I flew to Calgary, Alberta and then drove to Banff, a small town in the Rocky Mountains, where I am part of an international volunteer group. We are working in Banff national Park, the oldest national park in Canada, but I'll probably give you some more details about that later on.

There is always one person you love who becomes that definition.

"There is always one person you love who becomes that definition. It usually happens retrospectively,
but it happens eventually. This is the person who unknowingly sets the template for what you will always love
about other people, even if some of these lovable qualities are self-destructive and unreasonable.
The person who defines your understanding of love is not inherently different than anyone else,
and they’re often just the person you happen to meet the first time you really, really, want to love someone.
But that person still wins. They win, and you lose. Because for the rest of your life,
they will control how you feel about everyone else."

I like to challenge myself.

Okay, it's been quite a while since I, after 3 eventful years, left London behind. My last day of school was in april, my finals were in may and the graduation events were late may. Now it's august. The days are still long and warm, but I feel that summer is slowly coming to a close. Or maybe it just feels like that to me, because I will be leaving my beloved home in less than a week. I am going to fly to Canada to work, travel and get to know the world in a completely different way. For a year. Yes, by this point I'm beyond scared. I mean I like to challenge myself, but I know for a fact that the loneliness will crush me and that I will go mad if anything goes wrong (which it will). However, I'm also looking forward to it so unbelievably much, but right at this moment I just want to crawl under my blanket with a good crime thriller and never let anyone disturb me. Ever.
